Shaping Africa’s Digital Future through Research, Policy, Innovation and Capacity

Welcome!

Digital technologies are transforming African economies and societies, yet technological transformation does not occur in a legal, institutional, or policy vacuum. To ensure a net positive outcome in terms of digital transformation, Africa needs institutions capable of engaging difficult questions such as:

How should emerging technologies be governed?

• How can innovation flourish while protecting fundamental rights?
• How should governments regulate artificial intelligence?
• How can African countries build secure and trusted digital economies?
• How can technology accelerate sustainable development?
• How should international law respond to technological change?
• How can Africa influence—not merely implement—the rules governing the global digital
economy?

ACDET
ACDET exists to help answer these questions. We generate knowledge, develop policy solutions, build institutional capacity, and convene the people and institutions necessary to shape Africa's digital future.
Technology is not our ultimate goal; it is a tool to build a better life for our citizens. We must know our own needs and build technology around them, not depend on importing DPI from other countries.”

Digital Research & Policy

Africa’s digital future will be shaped not only by technological innovation, but also by the policies, laws, institutions, and societal choices that guide how technology is developed and used. ACDET conducts interdisciplinary research to better understand these dynamics and support informed decision-making across the continent.

Our work examines emerging technologies and their implications for governance, regulation, human rights, cybersecurity, peace and security, economic development, and social inclusion. We generate evidence and insights that help policymakers, institutions, businesses, and communities navigate Africa’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
